Early Years Foundation Stage

 Key Information

At Mountnessing C of E Primary School we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum which will enable each child to develop emotionally, socially, physically, creatively, and intellectually to their full potential and at their own pace. The Foundation Stage is a unique and important educational stage in children’s first year of school. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage profile which is based around play. It recognises that children between the ages of four and five need to learn in an active, relaxed environment which allows them to learn through discovery and play.

There are 7 areas of learning and development within the Foundation Stage framework, 3 prime areas of learning and 4 specific areas of learning.

Prime Areas

Specific Areas

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Communication, Language and Literacy

Physical Development

Literacy

Numeracy

Understanding of the World

Expressive Arts and Design

Play is a young child’s work and the means by which they make sense of the world. There needs to be a balance between new, challenging play opportunities, both inside and out. These activities will motivate children to play and learn, within familiar activities which consolidate children’s learning and skills, boosting their confidence.

Through our teaching and assessment, we build up a Foundation Stage Profile on each child. We aim to provide a caring, positive, and secure learning environment, in which our children can develop. We hope that all pupils will feel relaxed, safe and happy and that they will subsequently acquire positive attitudes towards learning and school.

The Daily Routine

The children in Acorn Class are greeted everyday by Mrs Goddard and follow a set routine which children soon learn. This helps with self confidence. There is lots of support given to encourage children to carry out these tasks independently e.g. finding their peg, putting their book bags in the box and their water bottles away.

Following registration we talk about the sequence of the day. Our daily phonic sessions consist of exploring sounds, reading, spelling, high frequency words and applying skills learnt to encourage independence in these areas. We also incorporate into our curriculum, weekly forest schools, ICT and PE sessions, and daily opportunities for inside and outside learning.

Next, we will be learning about plants and what they need to survive. We will be planting our own plants and we will be taking care of them ourselves. We will also have a plant investigation corner where we will investigate what will have to the plants if they are in the dark.

Summer Term 1

This term we will be learning about water. We have started our topic by asking the children what they would like to learn about. During our planning session the children thought of questions that they would like to be able to answer by the end of our topic. Here are a few examples of the questions the children asked –

Why is water so precious?

What do dolphins eat?

Why is there coral in the sea?

During this topic we will be sharing fiction and non fiction books to help us find out more about water. In Literacy we will be reading The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and we will make a boat for Mr Grinling to get from his cottage to the lighthouse. We will continue to develop our ICT skills by using a wide variety of tools to enable us to create pictures of lighthouses and sea creatures. We will be learning to adapt our own work by creating a lighthouse out of junk modelling materials. We will be exploring objects that float and sink and experimenting to find waterproof materials.

Each week we will continue to enjoy our ForestSchool sessions both on site and at Fox Earth Woods. We will be creating natural art work in the style of Goldsworthy, building miniature woodlands, creating dens, climbing trees, exploring the woodland and much more!
